Help & Guides

Codex

The Codex is a general-purpose table builder. GMs and players alike can create their own groups of tables, such as combat encounters, points of interest, NPC names, loot, or party inventory, and roll a random result with one click.

Tip: The Codex is intentionally open-ended. There's already a dedicated Glossary for creature stat blocks, so use the Codex for anything that doesn't fit neatly into an existing page.

Groups, Tables, and Rows

The Codex has three levels:

  • Groups: a named collection of related tables (e.g. "Encounter Prep").
  • Tables: a list of rows inside a group (e.g. "Combat Encounters"). Each table can have an optional number label (like "CR" or "Qty") and up to 8 of your own extra columns.
  • Rows: a single entry with a name, an optional number, values for any extra columns, an optional roll weight, a "used" flag, and an optional link to a creature or quest.

Groups and tables belong to whoever created them. Only you can edit your own, and everything is private unless you choose to share it.

Sharing a Table

Every table has a Shared toggle. Turning it on makes the table visible to the whole campaign under the "Shared with party" tab, read-only for everyone except you.

This is useful for GMs who want to publish a lore table to players, or players who want to share a party inventory list.

Rolling

Click the dice icon on a table card, a group header, or the page-level "Roll" button to draw a random row.

A roll always draws exactly one result, no matter how many tables you select. Selecting several tables at once combines them into a single pool that one row is drawn from, it does not roll once per table.

You can select a single table, an entire group, or any hand-picked combination of tables, plus a few options that change how the draw works:

  • Skip rows already marked used: rows checked off as "used" are left out of the draw, keeping rolls fresh during prep.
  • No repeats until every row has come up: avoids drawing the same row twice in a row this session. Once every eligible row has come up once, the list resets and rows can repeat.
  • Give every table equal odds: changes how multiple selected tables are combined. Off (the default), every eligible row across every table is pooled together, so a table with more rows naturally contributes more of the possible outcomes. On, a table is chosen first (every selected table has the same chance regardless of size), then a row is drawn from within it.

Give a row a higher weight to make it come up more often. A weight of 2 is twice as likely as the default of 1. A recent roll history is kept for quick reference.

Import & Export

Click "Import" to paste CSV/TSV text or upload a file. The wizard walks through:

  • Choosing a destination: a new table, splitting into multiple tables by a column, or adding/replacing rows in an existing table.
  • Mapping each column to Name, Number, Weight, an extra column, or ignoring it.
  • Previewing the first 10 rows before confirming.

Every table (and each open table's row grid) also has an Export CSV button to download its contents.

Linking a Row

Any row can be linked to an existing Glossary creature or Quest. Click the link icon on a row to search and attach one; it shows up as a chip you can click to jump straight to that page.

Starter Templates

Click "Templates" to seed a ready-made group with a couple of useful tables: Encounter Prep, NPCs on the Fly, Loot & Rewards, or Party Inventory. Everything a template adds is fully editable and deletable afterward, so it's just a head start, not a locked-in structure.

Ideas for Using the Codex

Encounter Prep

Combat encounters and points of interest ready to roll during a session.

NPCs on the Fly

Names, quirks, and shop signage for improvising background characters.

Loot & Rewards

Trinkets and treasure to hand out after a fight.

Party Inventory

A player-facing list of shared or personal gear.

Rumor Tables

A shared, read-only table of tavern rumors for players to browse.

Anything else

The Codex isn't locked to one use case. Build whatever list your table needs.
