Maps
The Maps section lets Game Masters share visual maps with the party: world maps, dungeon layouts, city districts, and anything else you can link to. Maps are URL‑based, meaning you provide a link to an image hosted elsewhere and Mythical Atlas displays it inline.
Tip: Add tags to your maps so players can quickly filter by region, dungeon name, or theme.
Hosting Your Map Images
Mythical Atlas does not upload or store image files directly. Instead, you paste a direct image URL from an external host. The image is then displayed in your campaign map gallery.
Recommended Hosting Services
Free, reliable, and widely used. Upload an image, right-click → "Copy image address" for a direct link.
Upload your image, set sharing to "Anyone with the link", then convert the share URL to a direct image link.
Watch out for dynamic links
Some services (like Discord) generate temporary or dynamic image URLs that expire after a short time. If you paste a Discord attachment link, the map image may stop loading after the link expires.
For reliable, long-term links, use a dedicated image host like Imgur or Google Drive.
Posting a Map
GM onlyClick "Post Map" and fill in the following:
- •Title (required): a name for the map, e.g. "Phandalin Town Map".
- •Description : optional notes or context about the map.
- •Image URL (required): a direct link to the hosted image (must end in an image extension or be a valid image URL).
- •Tags : optional keywords like "city", "dungeon", "world". Helps with filtering.
If the image URL is broken or unreachable, a placeholder image will be shown instead so the card doesn't appear empty.
Searching & Filtering
Find maps quickly using two tools:
- Search: text search across titles, descriptions, and tags.
- Tag filter: dropdown with all tags used across maps. Select a tag to show only maps that include it.
Both filters work together so you can narrow results efficiently.
Viewing Maps
Maps are displayed as cards in a responsive grid. Each card shows the map image, title, description preview, and tags.
Click on a map image to open it in a lightbox modal, a full‑screen overlay where you can see the map in full detail. Click outside the image or press Escape to close the lightbox.
Editing & Deleting Maps
GM onlyGame Masters can manage any map from its card:
- Edit: update the title, description, image URL, or tags.
- Delete: permanently remove the map. This cannot be undone.
Example Workflow
Here's a typical map workflow:
- 1The GM draws or finds a world map and uploads it to Imgur.
- 2From Imgur, the GM copies the direct image link (e.g. https://i.imgur.com/abc123.png).
- 3In Mythical Atlas, the GM clicks "Post Map", pastes the URL, adds a title like "Sword Coast", and tags it "world" and "overworld".
- 4The map appears in the gallery. Players click on it to open the lightbox and study the geography.
- 5Later, the GM adds a dungeon map with tags "dungeon" and "Wave Echo Cave". Players filter by tag to find it quickly.
